Anthropology & Archaeology Links
This page features links to anthropology and archaeology
sites.
Anthropology is best divided into two distinct sub fields:
Cultural anthropology focuses on the ways people live in a society--in particular the ways in which their language, culture and customs develop; physical anthropology concentrates on the biological evolution and physiological adaptations of human beings.
Think of archaeology, and we think of such characters as Indiana Jones or Alan Quartermain setting out on their adventures to search for lost artifacts as they escape imminent danger and attract the beautiful girl in the meantime. Leave it to Hollywood to glamorize
such a scientifically intense field!
Archaeology is a science involving months, if not years, of planning the expedition, the careful recovery of artifacts, recording dig site information into a journal, analyzing artifacts, recording analysis data, then turning over artifacts to a museum. There might me *some* adventure involved, depending on who you talk to, but never life-threatening, and I doubt that any bull whips are involved.
But Hollywood has to make excitement out of a fascinating, and rather *boring* (in the sense of adventure and romance) scientific field to entertain the droves of humans who flock to movies, otherwise they would not pay hard earned money to see a movie.
To see real archaeology at work, tune in to the documentaries on PBS, the Discovery Channel, A&E, or the History Channel; or peruse magazines such as National Geographic, Smithsonian, Archaeology, or Natural History, or you can research any of the links below!!
